Getting Around
Everything you need to know about navigating Marrakech: petit taxis, grand taxis, buses, walking in the Medina, and tips for avoiding common transport scams.
Everything you need to know about getting from RAK airport to your hotel, with prices, tips, and how to avoid common scams.
Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is the main gateway to the Red City, handling millions of passengers every year from Europe, the Middle East, and beyond. The airport sits just 6 km southwest of the Medina, making the journey to most hotels and riads a quick 15- to 30-minute ride depending on traffic and your chosen transport.
The terminal is modern and well-organized, with ATMs, currency exchange counters, and SIM card vendors available in the arrivals hall. Once you exit through the main doors, you will find the taxi rank directly ahead and the bus stop to your left. Having a plan before you land makes all the difference, especially if you arrive late at night.
Regardless of which transfer option you choose, always have some Moroccan dirhams ready. While the airport ATMs accept international cards, exchange rates at the terminal are slightly worse than in the city. Withdrawing 200-300 MAD (20-30 EUR) at the airport is enough to cover your transfer and first tips. See our money and tipping guide for currency and ATM advice, and our guide to choosing a riad to ensure your accommodation is ready for when you arrive.
Grand Taxi: The most popular option for travellers. Official beige grand taxis queue outside the arrivals hall. The regulated fare to the Medina is 70-100 MAD (7-10 EUR) for the entire car, not per person. Always confirm the price before getting in and insist on the meter or the posted official rate. The ride takes about 15 minutes outside rush hour.
Bus 19 (Alsa): The cheapest option at just 30 MAD (3 EUR) per person. Bus 19 runs between the airport and Jemaa el-Fna roughly every 20-30 minutes from 6:00 AM to 11:30 PM. The journey takes around 30 minutes with several stops. Luggage is stored in the hold. Tickets can be purchased from the driver or at the small booth near the stop.
Private Transfer: Pre-booked private transfers cost 150-250 MAD (15-25 EUR) depending on vehicle type. A driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign, handles your luggage, and takes you door to door. This is the stress-free option, especially for late-night flights or if you are travelling with family. Book through your riad or a reputable agency.
Unofficial taxi drivers: Inside the terminal, you may be approached by men offering taxi rides at inflated prices of 200-300 MAD or more. These are unlicensed drivers. Walk past them and head directly to the official taxi rank outside, where prices are regulated and clearly posted on a sign.
Ride-hailing apps: Careem (now part of Uber) operates in Marrakech and can be a convenient alternative. Fares from RAK to the Medina typically range from 50-80 MAD (5-8 EUR). Download the app and set up your account before landing. Note that drivers may ask you to meet them in the car park rather than at the arrivals kerb.
Late-night arrivals: If you land after midnight, Bus 19 will not be running. Grand taxis are still available but may charge a small night supplement. A pre-booked private transfer is the safest and most reliable choice for very late flights, as your driver will be waiting regardless of delays.
An official grand taxi from RAK airport to the Medina costs 70-100 MAD (7-10 EUR) for the entire car. The price is regulated and posted at the taxi rank. Always confirm the fare before departure and do not accept offers from unofficial drivers inside the terminal, who may charge 200-300 MAD or more.
